How to prepare for a plumbing licensing exam

Licensing examinations for plumbers are written against a specific adopted code edition and a published content outline, and that combination is what makes preparation tractable. The outline tells you which subject areas carry weight; the adopted code tells you which tables the answers come from. Candidates who revise without establishing both end up memorising values from the wrong edition, which is worse than not memorising them at all.

The second thing worth knowing is where the marks actually are. Drainage, waste and vent work is the largest single block on most journeyman papers, and venting is the part of it candidates lose most reliably: not because the rules are difficult but because the vent types are named similarly and the limits are diameter dependent. Plumbing mathematics is the opposite case: a small, closed set of topics where every answer can be checked by redoing the arithmetic, which makes it the cheapest section to secure.

Master-level papers shift the emphasis. They assume the installation knowledge and test whether you can apply code to a design, review someone else's work and diagnose a system from its symptoms. Many states also examine master candidates on business and law in separate sections, which this site does not cover.

A practical sequence: take the mixed starter paper below to find your two or three weakest topics, work those topic pages properly (reading the explanations, not just checking answers) then come back to a full-length timed paper. Use the retry queue between sessions. The questions you got wrong are the only ones worth repeating.

Practice exams

Each exam has a configurable timer, a question navigator, flagging for review, and a full answer review with per-topic breakdown when you submit.

25-Question Mixed Starter

A short mixed paper drawing from every topic. The quickest way to find out which areas need work before committing to a full-length practice exam.

Journeyman Practice Exam

A full-length paper weighted toward the installation and code topics that dominate journeyman examination outlines: DWV, venting, water supply and sizing.

  • 80 questions
  • 180 minute limit (optional)
  • 70% practice target

Master Practice Exam

A longer paper with more weight on code application, plan review, system design and diagnosing other people's work. The areas master examinations emphasise over hand skills.

  • 100 questions
  • 240 minute limit (optional)
  • 70% practice target

Code Practice Exam (IPC & UPC)

Code structure, adoption and the places where the IPC and UPC genuinely diverge, with the drainage and venting provisions those differences bite hardest on.

Plumbing Math Practice Exam

Numerical work only: offsets, grade, volume, pressure conversion and sizing arithmetic, with a worked solution for every question.

DWV & Venting Practice Exam

The largest block on most journeyman papers, examined on its own: fixture unit loading, slope, stack sizing, trap arms and every venting method.

Frequently asked questions

Is this plumber practice test free?

Yes. Every question, every practice exam and the progress tracking are free and need no account. Progress is stored in your own browser rather than on a server, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing to cancel.

How many practice questions are there?

There are 214 questions across fourteen topics, including 20 numerical exercises with worked solutions and 12 diagram exercises. All are written for this site; none are reproduced from a real examination.

Does this match the real journeyman or master plumber exam?

No, and we do not claim it does. Question counts, time limits and pass marks are set by each state licensing board and its testing vendor, and they are not uniform. Topic coverage here is modelled on publicly posted examination content outlines; the timing and pass marks are our own practice settings. Your candidate bulletin is the authoritative source for the exam you will sit.

Which code do the questions follow, IPC or UPC?

Both. Questions carry the code family, the edition and the subject of the provision they rest on, and any question whose answer differs between the IPC and the UPC says so explicitly. There is no national plumbing code in the United States: what applies to you is the model code your state has adopted, in the edition it has adopted, as amended locally.

Do I need to create an account to track my progress?

No. Your answers, accuracy by topic, exam results and the questions you missed are saved in this browser's local storage as you work. Clearing your browser data clears them, and they do not transfer between devices.

How hard is the plumbing licence exam?

Hard enough that people fail it, and in a predictable place. The recall questions on definitions, materials and fixtures are manageable. What catches candidates is venting, where the vent types are named similarly and the limits change with pipe diameter, and sizing, where the method has several steps that have to be done in the right order under time pressure. Plumbing mathematics is the opposite case and is the easiest section to secure, because every answer can be checked by redoing the arithmetic. We publish no pass-rate figures because we have no honest way to measure one.

How long should I study for a plumbing exam?

There is no single answer, because it depends on how recent your field experience is and how familiar you are with the specific code edition your jurisdiction has adopted. A more useful way to think about it is by signal rather than by hours: take a full-length timed paper, and if you are consistently above your board's passing score across every topic rather than on average, you are close. Average scores hide a weak topic that a real exam will find.

Are these the same questions that appear on the real exam?

No. Every question here is written for this site. Reproducing real examination questions would infringe the copyright of the bodies that write them, and it would not help you anyway, since examinations are revised and item banks rotate. What transfers is the reasoning, which is why each answer explains why it is correct rather than simply confirming it.

What happens if I fail a plumbing licensing exam?

That is set by your licensing board, and the rules differ. Boards commonly impose a waiting period before you can retake, charge a re-examination fee, and some limit how many attempts you may make within a period before additional requirements apply. Many also send a score report broken down by subject area, which is the most useful document you will get for deciding what to revise. Check your candidate bulletin for the retake policy that applies to you.

Can I use these practice tests on my phone?

Yes. Every page is responsive and the exercises work the same on a phone as on a desktop, including the diagrams. Your progress is stored in that browser, so practising on a phone and then on a laptop gives you two separate records rather than one shared one.

What is the best way to use this for exam preparation?

Take the 25-question mixed starter first to find your weak topics, then work the topic pages for the two or three that scored worst, using the explanations rather than just the answers. Come back to a full-length timed paper once those topics are solid, and work the retry queue between sessions: the questions you got wrong are the ones worth repeating.

What this material is, and what it is not

  • Every question here is written for this site. None is taken from a real examination, and no examination questions are reproduced: doing so would infringe the copyright of the bodies that write them.
  • No practice exam on this site is a replica of an official examination. Question counts, time limits and pass marks are set by individual state licensing boards and their testing vendors, are not uniform, and have not been verified here. Topic coverage is modelled on publicly posted examination content outlines; timing and pass marks are our own practice settings. Your candidate bulletin is the authoritative source for the examination you will actually sit.
  • Code references name the code family, the edition and the subject. Section numbers are given only where the citation is known to exist, and they move between editions : treat them as a pointer into your own copy of the adopted code, not as a substitute for it. What is enforceable where you work is the edition your jurisdiction has adopted, as amended locally.
  • 32 of the 214 questions carry a visible “flagged for review” note identifying technical content a licensed reviewer should still confirm, usually because the provision varies between codes, editions or jurisdictions. The flag is shown with the explanation rather than hidden.
  • Nothing here is a guarantee of an examination result, and no pass-rate figures are published on this site because we have no way to measure one honestly.
