This is practice, not a replica of an official exam. Topic weighting is modelled on the subject areas named in publicly posted journeyman plumber examination content outlines. The 80-question count, three-hour limit and 70 percent target are this site's practice settings: real examinations differ by state and are set by each licensing board and its testing vendor. Check your own board's candidate bulletin for the specification that applies to you.

What a journeyman plumber exam tests

A journeyman examination is testing whether you can install and inspect a system correctly against the code your jurisdiction has adopted. That makes it overwhelmingly a code-application paper with a mathematics section threaded through it, and the published content outlines reflect that: drainage, waste and vent work carries the most weight, water supply and distribution comes next, and fixtures, traps, materials, safety and mathematics fill out the remainder.

The questions are rarely about obscure provisions. They are about the provisions that are easy to half-know: the slope band that changes at 3 inches, the trap arm limit that depends on diameter, the difference between a stack vent and a vent stack, which fitting may not be used for a horizontal-to-horizontal change of direction. A candidate who knows the reasoning behind each of those answers them quickly; a candidate who memorised a list hesitates and loses time.

Two practical points about format. First, many jurisdictions run the examination open book against a specified code edition, which rewards knowing where things are over knowing what they say. Second, pacing matters: with a little over two minutes per question on a paper this length, the correct move on a hard sizing problem is to flag it and come back, not to spend ten minutes proving you can do it.

Before you revise any table, establish which model code and which edition your examination is written against: our plumbing code by state reference explains how adoption works and why the edition decides which tables apply.

Journeyman exam questions: FAQ

What does a journeyman plumber exam cover?

Published content outlines for journeyman examinations concentrate on installation and code application: drainage, waste and vent systems, venting, water supply and distribution, fixtures, traps and interceptors, pipe sizing and materials, plumbing mathematics, safety, and the code provisions behind all of them. Drainage and venting together usually carry the largest share. Business and law, where a state examines them, are normally separate from the trade paper.

How many questions are on a real journeyman plumber exam?

It varies by state, because each licensing board sets its own specification with its testing vendor. Our 80-question paper is not a replica of any particular examination: it is sized to be a realistic full-length session. Your candidate bulletin will state the actual question count, time limit and passing score for the examination you are booked to sit.

What score do I need to pass the journeyman exam?

That is set by your licensing board, and figures differ between jurisdictions. The 70 percent target on this practice paper is our own setting, chosen as a useful signal rather than copied from any board. Treat your own candidate bulletin as authoritative, and remember that some states score sections separately.

Is the journeyman exam open book?

Many jurisdictions run it as an open-book examination against a specified code edition, which changes how you should prepare: knowing which chapter governs which subject matters more than memorising table values, because you will be looking those up under time pressure. Confirm the format and the permitted references with your board before you revise: some examinations are closed book, and the permitted edition is always specified.

How do I become a journeyman plumber?

The usual route is a documented apprenticeship under a licensed plumber followed by a licensing examination, but the specifics are set state by state: the number of apprenticeship hours, whether classroom instruction is required alongside on-the-job hours, and what documentation the board will accept. Some states also recognise experience gained elsewhere through reciprocity. Your state board is the only authoritative source for the requirements that apply to you.

What kind of math is on the journeyman plumber exam?

A narrow and repeating set: right-triangle geometry for offsets and rolling offsets, grade and fall converted between inches per foot, percent and total drop, cylinder volume for pipe and tank capacity, and pressure to head conversion at 0.433 psi per foot. Fixture unit accumulation shows up inside the sizing questions. None of it goes beyond arithmetic, geometry and unit conversion, which is why it is the most reliably scoreable part of the paper.

Can I bring a calculator or the code book into the exam?

Often yes to both, but it is governed by your board and its testing vendor rather than by any general rule. Many plumbing examinations are open book against a specifically named code edition, and the permitted references are listed in the candidate bulletin, sometimes down to whether tabs and highlighting are allowed. Calculator policy varies from a basic four-function model supplied at the test centre to your own non-programmable device. Confirm both before test day.

How should I practise for a timed journeyman paper?

Work untimed first, reading every explanation including those for questions you answered correctly. Once a topic is solid, switch the timer on and practise pacing: on an 80-question paper with a three-hour limit you have a little over two minutes per question, and the discipline is to flag and move on rather than spend ten minutes on one sizing problem. Use the flag and navigator rather than answering in strict order.

What this material is, and what it is not

  • Every question here is written for this site. None is taken from a real examination, and no examination questions are reproduced: doing so would infringe the copyright of the bodies that write them.
  • No practice exam on this site is a replica of an official examination. Question counts, time limits and pass marks are set by individual state licensing boards and their testing vendors, are not uniform, and have not been verified here. Topic coverage is modelled on publicly posted examination content outlines; timing and pass marks are our own practice settings. Your candidate bulletin is the authoritative source for the examination you will actually sit.
  • Code references name the code family, the edition and the subject. Section numbers are given only where the citation is known to exist, and they move between editions : treat them as a pointer into your own copy of the adopted code, not as a substitute for it. What is enforceable where you work is the edition your jurisdiction has adopted, as amended locally.
  • 32 of the 214 questions carry a visible “flagged for review” note identifying technical content a licensed reviewer should still confirm, usually because the provision varies between codes, editions or jurisdictions. The flag is shown with the explanation rather than hidden.
  • Nothing here is a guarantee of an examination result, and no pass-rate figures are published on this site because we have no way to measure one honestly.
