This is practice, not a replica of an official exam. Topic weighting is modelled on the subject areas named in publicly posted master plumber examination content outlines, which put more emphasis on code application, design and review than journeyman outlines do. The 100-question count, four-hour limit and 70 percent target are this site's practice settings, not a published specification. Many states examine master candidates in separate law or business sections as well; those are not covered here.
How master-level questions differ
The shift from journeyman to master is a shift in who you are expected to be. A journeyman question asks what the code requires. A master question asks whether a given design satisfies it, what is wrong with an installation someone else produced, or what the symptom in front of you implies about a system you cannot see. The underlying code knowledge is the same; the direction of reasoning is reversed.
That reversal is why troubleshooting carries real weight on master papers and almost none on journeyman papers. A question that describes blown trap seals on the lowest branch of a stack is testing whether you know that positive pressure builds at a stack base: and, importantly, that an air admittance valve cannot fix it, because an AAV seals against positive pressure. Memorising that AAVs are permitted for island fixtures does not get you there; understanding what they do and do not do does.
Sizing questions also get harder in a specific way. They stop giving you the load and start giving you a building, so you accumulate fixture units along a branch, apply the no-reduction-in-direction-of-flow rule, check the fixed minimums that override the arithmetic, and only then read the table. Each step is simple; the examination is testing whether you perform all of them in the right order under time pressure.
Finally, a practical note on scope. Many states examine master candidates on business law, contracts, liens and licensing in separate sections. Those are state-specific to a degree that makes national practice material misleading rather than helpful, so this paper covers the trade content only. Check your candidate bulletin for the full set of sections you face.
How this paper is weighted
Compared with our journeyman paper, code application and plan-review topics carry a larger share here, and pure installation detail a smaller one.
Master-level warm-up questions
Six questions drawn from the diagnosis, code application and pressure topics this paper emphasises.
A water heater's temperature and pressure relief valve weeps repeatedly, but the water temperature is correct and the valve has been replaced. What should be investigated?
Master plumber exam questions: FAQ
How does the master plumber exam differ from the journeyman exam?
A journeyman examination tests whether you can install correctly. A master examination assumes that and tests whether you can apply code to a design, review someone else's work, size a system from first principles and diagnose a fault from its symptoms. Published master outlines put proportionally more weight on code application, plan review and system design, and proportionally less on hand installation detail.
Does the master plumber exam include business and law questions?
In many states, yes. Typically as a separate section or an entirely separate examination covering contracts, liens, insurance, workers' compensation, tax and licensing law. Those vary so much by state that they cannot usefully be practised on a national basis, and this site does not attempt it. Check your candidate bulletin for which sections apply to you.
How long is the master plumber exam?
Each licensing board sets its own specification with its testing vendor, so the length differs by state. Our 100-question paper with a four-hour limit is sized to be a realistic full-length session, not a replica of any particular examination. Your candidate bulletin is authoritative for question count, time limit and passing score.
What topics do master candidates most often lose marks on?
Three recur. Sizing from accumulated loads rather than from individual fixtures, where the arithmetic is simple but the method is easy to get wrong under time pressure. Venting methods, where the IPC and UPC genuinely diverge and habits from one jurisdiction do not transfer to the other. And troubleshooting questions, which are written backwards from the rest of the paper: they give a symptom and ask for the cause, so they test whether your knowledge of the rules includes knowing what breaks when each is ignored.
Is the master plumber exam harder than the journeyman exam?
Different rather than simply harder. The code knowledge the two examinations draw on is largely the same; what changes is the direction of reasoning. A journeyman question asks what the code requires. A master question gives you a design, an installation or a symptom and asks whether it complies, what is wrong with it, or what the fault implies. Candidates with strong field experience often find the troubleshooting questions easier than expected and the plan-review questions harder.
How much experience do I need before sitting the master plumber exam?
It is set by your state board and is normally expressed as a period of time holding a journeyman licence, sometimes with additional documented experience in specific kinds of work. Several states also require a business or law examination alongside the trade paper, and some require proof of insurance or bonding before a licence is issued rather than before the examination. Check your board's requirements rather than a general figure.
Do I need to know both the IPC and the UPC?
You need the code your jurisdiction has adopted, in the edition it has adopted, including local amendments. Knowing where the two model codes differ is still valuable, because it tells you which of your habits are code-specific rather than universal: and because a master candidate reviewing drawings produced elsewhere needs to recognise an arrangement that is routine in one code and prohibited in the other.

What this material is, and what it is not
- Every question here is written for this site. None is taken from a real examination, and no examination questions are reproduced: doing so would infringe the copyright of the bodies that write them.
- No practice exam on this site is a replica of an official examination. Question counts, time limits and pass marks are set by individual state licensing boards and their testing vendors, are not uniform, and have not been verified here. Topic coverage is modelled on publicly posted examination content outlines; timing and pass marks are our own practice settings. Your candidate bulletin is the authoritative source for the examination you will actually sit.
- Code references name the code family, the edition and the subject. Section numbers are given only where the citation is known to exist, and they move between editions : treat them as a pointer into your own copy of the adopted code, not as a substitute for it. What is enforceable where you work is the edition your jurisdiction has adopted, as amended locally.
- 32 of the 214 questions carry a visible “flagged for review” note identifying technical content a licensed reviewer should still confirm, usually because the provision varies between codes, editions or jurisdictions. The flag is shown with the explanation rather than hidden.
- Nothing here is a guarantee of an examination result, and no pass-rate figures are published on this site because we have no way to measure one honestly.
